Ghost Countries Podcast #9 - Minami-Torishima

In our first podcast covering a ghost geography, we look into Japan’s easternmost territory, Minami-Torishima. Despite being little more than a dot on the world map, this island located in the northwestern Pacific, was the sight of a territorial dispute between the Japan and the United States (the so-called Minami-Torishima Incident), which pitted the claims of Captain A. A. Rosehill against those of Mizutani Shinroku. Wrapped up in the guano craze of the mid-19th and early 20th centuries, Minami-Torishima would later also feature somewhat prominently in Japanese Nanshiron (Southward Advance Theory), WWII, and...of all things, Pokémon!
