Pan of lake STORYLINE: The United States Marine Corps, together with the Finnish Navy and Coastal Brigade, on Monday displayed drones which have been used for the past month to enhance security on the Baltic Sea. At the end of February, the U.S. Marine Corps unit of approximately 40 personnel arrived in Finland. Their use of unmanned aerial vehicles has been part of NATO’s Baltic Sentry surveillance operation. The unit has been assisted by the Finnish Coastal Brigade. According to Major Martin Harris of EUMARFOR (European Maritime Force), this was “a unique opportunity for NATO nations to participate in an operation that not only increases their abilities together individually and as a whole but it's to protect very critical infrastructure that is key to allies in this region and worldwide.” The equipment used during the past month included Puma unmanned air vehicles and combat rubber raiding crafts. Captain Adan Galindo of the U.S. Marine Corps said the vehicles were doing what the Marines call ‘maritime domain awareness’. “If we find anything that's interesting out there or anything that's traversing, we're able to put a Puma in vicinity of, and try to identify what it is and just get clarification,” Galindo says. At today’s display, Finnish Navy Deputy Chief of Staff, Captain Marko Laaksonen said that Baltic Sentry had cut response times to suspicious activities from 17 hours in October, to under one hour now. “So that's quite a huge thing for us.” Baltic Sentry was announced by NATO in January in order to deter any future attempts by a state or non-state actor to damage critical undersea infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The operation was set up in response to damage to undersea cables connecting Estonia and Finland on Christmas Day last year. On Boxing Day, Finland seized the tanker Eagle S after it was suspected of damaging a Baltic Sea power cable and several data cables. Finnish police and a border force rapid reaction unit descended from helicopters to board the vessel, which was suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet and took over the command bridge. For the USMC troops who have been stationed in Norway but brought here at a week’s notice, the operation has been an important experience.
