Amid tight security at London's Heathrow Airport, Assad and his wife Asma arrived at 6 p.m. (1800 GMT) on a private Syrian Airlines A320 Airbus and received a red carpet welcome. Amid threats of US-led war against Iraq, and continuing violence between Israelis and Palestinians, Assad is expected to warn Blair during his visit that military action against Saddam Hussein could destabilize the region. Assad is to meet with Blair and Queen Elizabeth II during his visit Sunday through Wednesday. Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa is to accompany the president and meet with British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw. The three-day official visit is the first to Britain made by a Syrian president. In October 2001, Blair became the first British prime minister to visit the Syrian capital Damascus. As a member of the 15-member UN Security Council, Syria recently voted with Britain and America on a resolution demanding Iraq turn over any weapons of mass destruction it possesses or face serious consequences. However the Syrian President opposes a unilateral US attack on Baghdad.
