Settlements in Bagan started halfway through the 9th century. In the year 1044, King Anawrahta found the Bagan Kingdom and the Sacred Buddhist scriptures were brought back to Bagan from Thaton and Tripitaka. It has also become an important place for Theravada Buddhism. More than 10,000 temples and monuments were built in Bagan between the 11th and 13th centuries. Began was almost deserted after the 15th Century. It is still a pilgrimage centre and UNESCO has taken it for future consideration to make it a world heritage site.
