Since SolGato my Solar Electric Catamaran is back on the water I stopped using the Hobie Wave as my tender to get in and out to the Seawing Trimaran, and since I wasn’t using the ELite anymore, I decided to fabricate a mount for it that extends off the Seawing’s ICE Outboard mount so that I could use it to get on and off my mooring and to cruise up the river slowly and quietly in a controlled manor. You see, sometimes when you have a very light boat like the Seawing, an ICE outboard pushes the boat too fast because it has to maintain idle speed, whereas an electric outboard can be throttled down to only a few RPM. This allows you time to leave the helm to easily pickup a mooring, or to grab something without the stress of things happening too quickly. But the big question was if the little 500W EPropulsion ELite motor was up to the task? Well, I already knew it would be from past experience, and knowing how little power it takes to get an efficient multihull moving through the water. So I made a mount for it a few weeks back, and just yesterday had a chance to try it out under load while moving the Seawing Trimaran out of the Bay and up Hanalei river in an effort to avoid any weather that Hurricane Kiko might bring. In the end, the motor worked well and was able to push the Trimaran at 2 knots up river against mild current and wind using only half throttle or 250W of input power.
