The ideal music producer lifestyle... - - Join the masterclass early-bird list: https://launch.bspmasterclass.com/fb/ - - I have come to realize that creativity is a way of life. You can’t just live a mediocre lifestyle and expect creativity to strike everyday. You have to cultivate it. I have talked extensively about the main pillars of a healthy lifestyle to promote creativity. Eating, exercising, sleeping, etc. In today’s video, I’d like to talk about more subtle areas of your lifestyle that need attention for you to become the most creative version of yourself. 1- Rest Resting is not just about sleeping or napping. You can definitely wake up exhausted after 10 hours of sleep. Resting is in the mind. How do you talk to yourself internally when you have a tight deadline? How do talk to yourself when you’re having an off day? Do you allow yourself to truly not think about music when you’re out of the studio? The goal is to refine your inner dialogue to the point where you do not exhaust yourself when you’re not actually doing the work. 2- Play I read “Play It Away” by Charlie Koehn a while back. He’s Tim Ferriss’ assistant. And like me, he struggled with anxiety and depression. His approach to dealing with these problems actually blew me away by their simplicity: as adults, we stop playing. As kids, it’s a defacto kind of thing. But as adults, when and how do we have fun both physically and mentally in a way that has no goal, no plan, no need to accomplish anything significant? For me, the solution was to start shooting hoops again. When I drop my son to school, I go to my local YMCA and shoot around for about an hour. It’s an easy workout, and I come back to the studio energized. So here’s your homework: how do you play? What activities can you pick back up to empty your mind, put a smile on your face, and forget about your struggles in the studio? 3- Process Creativity works in mysterious ways. One day, you can spend 8 hours on this one tiny loop and go nowhere. You open the computer back the next day, and BOOM, within a few seconds, you delete a track, speed it up, take it down 2 semitones, add a cowbell, and you’ve got yourself a winner. So why couldn’t you get anywhere in hours, but then find the missing piece to the puzzle in seconds? This is because unbeknownst to you, those 8 hours were preparing you to become the producer who then figures it all out in seconds. That’s why you have to trust the process and accept off days. After a few years of this, I feel very comfortable closing the computer after a day where nothing clicked, because I know that the time I have spent makes me deservant in the future. No effort goes unrecognized in this game. That’s why you have to keep your head down and grind. The only solution, it seems, is to put in the time. - - Join the masterclass early-bird list: https://launch.bspmasterclass.com/fb/
