Mechanical Design I (ME 370) students were challenged to design a fully autonomous legged dispensing robot capable of traveling a 10-meter hallway while releasing payloads every 2 meters... all driven by a single continuously running motor. Teams had to store multiple items, dispense them in sequence, and keep the robot stable without rails, tracks, or external control systems. To make it even harder: the entire system had to fit inside a shoebox-sized volume, use rapid-prototyped components, remain mechanically visible for inspection, and survive continuous operation without tipping or losing payloads. Students also selected real campus-inspired use cases (dorm delivery, medical supplies, etc...) and designed their robot to match those user needs. This project pushes students to combine locomotion, timing mechanisms, drivetrain design, stability, and human-centered engineering into one synchronized system... proving that classroom theory can literally walk down the hallway.
