The complete making of a freehand apple shape. The process begins with a raw block of processed and cured briar from Italy and is finished with a mouthpiece made from premium German extruded ebonite rod stock. As is typical with my videos, the finish is sandblasted. The rounded teardrop shank’s line extends toward the bowl’s lip and traces the transition between straight grain and birdseye along the side of the bowl. At some point in the near future I'll manage to film the process I use for creating a smooth finish. It's hard to justify the time, as my smooth work can take a week or longer for the finish alone whereas a sandblasted finish can be done in a day with good luck. It’s been a little while since I’ve shot and published a video, so I’m relearning a lot. I decided to eliminate the background music and to let you all hear the shop sounds for a little ASMR action. Thanks for your understanding with the multiple missed focus shots, blown out highlights, and other silly mistakes. Such is videography as a pipemaker. I’ll do better next time.
