DERBYSHIRE DALES PARISH #29: LITTON Litton – “Hillside Farm” I don’t know about you, but I am really enjoying my time in the Derbyshire Dales right now. We’ve seen some fabulous stuff in this district of late, but today I reckon we’re in one of the best so far. This is Litton – and boy does this have some stuff to talk about. Litton parish contains two main settlements. One is the village itself, located close to the A623 about a mile away from Tideswell. Its up in the hills above the valley of the River Wye, which we last met at Miller’s Dale. One thing we didn’t really touch on in Miller’s Dale is how it got its name. The clue is in the name though – there were mills on the river, and big ones at that. Litton had its own, but perhaps the largest and most well known belonged to the other settlement in the parish – Cressbrook. First built by Sir Richard Arkwright, and then rebuilt and extended later, Cressbrook produced high quality cotton for lacemaking, using the power of the River Wye to do so. Before the mills, Cressbrook simply did not exist. As for Litton, lead mining was the main source of employment for the locals. We’ll touch on both industries as we journey around these villages – one high in the Derbyshire hills, the other in a steep sided valley. Oh and we’ll also be admiring a well known beauty spot in this one too. Like I said, there’s a lot here.
