Today on Harf-e-Raaz: two sitting Supreme Court judges — Justice Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Athar Minallah — have tendered their resignations following the passage and signing of the 27th Constitutional Amendment. The amendment — widely reported to expand military authority and curtail the apex court’s powers via a new constitutional mechanism — triggered the resignations as a protest over what the judges and critics call an erosion of judicial independence. In this episode I explain the background: what the 27th Amendment changes, why these two justices say they cannot continue, and whether more judges might follow suit. We’ll also examine whether this can lead to a nationwide lawyers’ and public movement similar to the 2007–2009 events around Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry — when mass protests and legal activism forced corrective action — and what lessons that episode holds for today.
