There's something special about the touch of another human. A simple handshake, a pat on the back, a tap on the hand... These simple gestures can convey an enormous amount of information. This information is valuable and incredibly important for the human race. I recently read an article that illustrated the importance of haptic communication (link below) and it reminded me of a proof of concept I put together a few years back exploring the idea of providing a mechanism to capture, record and playback human touch. This single node haptic suspension device uses some simple off-the-shelf parts to demonstrate the idea. When a person pushes on one button, the force is translated into a signal and transferred to another remote node. You can literally feel the person on the other end of the button. If you're interested in this project, let me know! I would love to move it further along. My idea is to shrink this system down and create an array of these nodes on a small plate, about the size of a mouse pad. The feeling would be like pushing against someone else through a thick cloth. Things like body heat and other sensations can also be measured and reproduced bring us humans one step closer. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/05/wor...
