Learn more about getting an adjustable gastric band: http://bariatric.stopobesityforlife.c... Adjustable gastric band surgery is used to help you lose weight. The surgeon places an adjustable band around the upper part of your stomach to make a little sack that holds food—typically about an ounce. The adjustable band restricts the portion of food you can consume by filling up the sack (stomach) quickly and allowing you to feel full faster, thus preventing you from overeating. The surgery is performed by using a small camera that is temporarily placed in your stomach. This allows your doctor to see your stomach with cutting edge precision. This process is known as laparoscopy and has been used in surgical procedures since the mid 80’s. The way it works is that your doctor places a small band around the upper portion of your stomach to isolate it from the lower part. This produces a small sack which has a narrowed down opening that goes into the bigger, lower part of your stomach. There is no cutting or stapling inside your stomach whatsoever involved in this surgery. Surgery times can vary, depending on the skill and experience of your surgeon. Typically the procedure takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. After the surgery is performed, your physician can fine-tune your band to make food pass even more gradually or more rapidly through the stomach, depending upon your individual needs and requirements.
