Freewheelers (1971) TV Series S6 Episode 6: 'The Threat' (Part 6 of 7)

Freewheelers was a very good British Action/Adventure series for young people broadcast on ITV between 1968-73. It was made by Southern Television, who had the ITV franchise for the south coast of England. As such they had a newsroom helicopter and boats which, when not in use, were available for drama productions. These, along with help from the Royal Navy and other organisations as well as extensive location filming in England, the British Channel, and Europe gave Freewheelers an epic look far above the budget available. Consequently the series was known as being like 'James Bond for young people'. Publicity for the show stated “Action is what Freewheelers is all about . . . the snarl of high-powered engines, the stammer of automatic rifles and the shattering roar of a bomb that only just missed blowing the Freewheelers sky high." The stories very much reflected this. Young people in their late teens, but played by twenty-somethings, became involved with secret plots by criminal masterminds. One of the young people was Wendy Padbury who played Sue after finishing her role as Zoe in Doctor Who. The dashing British spy, who the young people helped, was Colonel Buchan played by Ronald Leigh-Hunt. Fans of Michael Ripper's many appearances in Hammer Films will enjoy his performance here as one of the villains. He appears, along with Richard Shaw, in all 13 episodes and creates a memorable character. They both reprise their roles as Ryan and Burke from the sadly missing Series 5. Unfortunately, the first five Series were wiped by ITV but Series 6, shown here, was kept. It consists of two linked stories of 7 episodes and 6 episodes. Part 6 of 7: Colin has been shot and Sue is up to her neck in trouble, while Professor Nero is getting closer to perfecting Medusa. Broadcast 01 November 1971.
