Alan Plater (1935-2010) was an English playwright and screenwriter, a major force in British television, radio, theater and cinema during the golden age of comedy, drama series and plays. Plater had over 300 credits in radio, television, theatre and the cinema. In this unique 1962 BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) radio play - The Rainbow Machine - the 28-year-old Plater assumes the persona of fictitious disc jockey Steve Jordan, a self-described phony. On his Saturday night radio show ‘Spinning with Steve’, Jordan - with feigned sincerity and cheerfulness - announces records, plays requests, and gives song dedications. Then off-air while the records spin, his public image gives way to his true bitter, alcoholic self as he cynically gripes to himself and generally rages against the machine. This program was originally broadcast on the BBC Home Service, 25 September 1962. The BBC Home Service was a national and regional radio station that broadcast from 1939 until 1967, when it was replaced by BBC Radio 4.
