Janggyeongpanjeon Depositories of Haeinsa Temple, Hapcheon The Janggyeongpanjeon Depositories are home to over 87,000 printing woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana and other Buddhist texts. Its carefully picked location and deliberately designed conservation methods have played a crucial role in the preservation of the woodblocks to this day. In recognition of these outstanding values, Janggyeongpanjeon Depositories were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995. The depositories are the oldest buildings in Haeinsa Temple. Although it is unknown when they were first built, records state they were renovated in 1488. Since then, they have undergone only minor renovations. The depositories' location within the temple is not only symbolic, as it is higher than the main worship hall, but also functional. The depositories are protected from behind by the shaded mountain to the north and face the open grounds of the temple to the south, which is a secure location and encourages air circulation. The depositories consist of four buildings, arranged in a rectangular layout with a courtyard in the middle. The two longer buildings in the front and back, Sudarajang Hall and Beopbojeon Hall, store the Tripitaka Koreana, and the two shorter buildings on the sides store the other various Buddhist texts. The exteriors are simple and lack decoration. Inside, the floors are covered with a mix of charcoal, lime powder, salt, and sand to control humidity. The windows have different shapes and sizes to provide an appropriate amount of sunlight and ventilation. The shelves are designed to be exposed on all sides, and the woodblocks themselves have thick handles, which creates gaps between woodblocks to enhance air circulation.
