Wide of Iranian and American flags in front yard, Farhadi’s silhouette observes from the front door STORYLINE: With a TV tuned to a news channel in her living room in Lafayette, Indiana, Afagh Farhadi has been closely following the situation unfolding in her home country since the United States and Israel launched a major attack on Iran Saturday, resulting in the killing of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “It’s a mixed feeling. We are stressed for sure,” said the 33-year-old postdoctoral researcher in electrical engineering at Purdue University. “War is not beautiful. War will have casualties. But to be honest, the casualties of this war are nothing comparable to what we have lost in our protests.” Like many Iranians in the homeland and in the diaspora, Farhadi has a positive view of Khamenei’s death. “I think that we should be all on the same page, that the majority of Iranians are celebrating and are happy that the dictator is gone,” she said. “He had killed so many Iranians and so many people from other nations as well.” While President Donald Trump initially urged Iranians to overthrow their government, senior administration officials have since said regime change was not the goal. Trump said Tuesday that “someone from within” Iran’s government might be best suited to take power once the war is over. Farhadi who has been in the U.S. since 2017 said she is hopeful about the future of her home country but wants Iranians to be in charge of their destiny. =========================================================== Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
