Prophets of da City, "Understand Where I'm Coming From" (off Age of Truth, Ghetto Ruff, 1993). Prophets of da City (POC) is a socially conscious hip-hop crew from Cape Town, South Africa. It drew on the teachings of Black Consciousness in order to challenge racism and social injustice by the apartheid state. Age of Truth, POC's third album, was possibly its most provocative album because it was released during the build-up to South Africa's first democratic elections and essentially challenged citizens to think critically about reconciliation between political activists and the ruling National Party, which devised apartheid legislation and used the military and police force to repress any challenges to their rule. The album was banned by the censorship board and, even after the first democratic elections, POC had difficulty in securing airplay for songs from this album. Effectively, the band was facing serious difficulties. However, they went on to release a few more albums in SA and the UK: Phunk Phlow, Universal Soldiers and Ghetto Code. POC's core members during the release of Age of Truth were DJ Ready D, Shaheen Ariefdien, Ramone de Wet, Jazzmo, Ishmael Morabe, Junior Danisa Dread and the late Mark Heuwel. This video is being shared non-commercially because material on black youth culture and subversive art in South Africa during the early 90s is rare. This video is therefore of educational, cultual, historical and political significance.
