Here is a very nicely remastered audience recording from the British progressive rock group Yes in concert at the Hartford Civic Center (now known as the XL Center) on September 1, 1980. This performance was the third date on the 1980 Tour supporting the newly-released album 'Drama' after an August 29th Opening Night at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens and an August 30th show at the Montreal Forum. Yes fans, and most especially their sub group "Panthers" (see Henry Potts quote and article link at bottom), will enjoy a fine effort turned in by a thoroughly rebooted Yes lineup shaken by the 1979 departure of both lead singer and founding member Jon Anderson and keyboards god Rick Wakeman. The three remaining members of Yes (Chris Squire, Steve Howe and Alan White) met and then asked a UK Pop duo called The Buggles to join forces and the 1980 'Drama' album and tour were the new children of that marriage. Excerpts of the Buggles hit "Video Killed The Radio Star" are played during Geoff Downes' keyboard solo. One interesting feature of this Hartford performance was the inclusion of a Steve Howe outro guitar solo at the end of the new album's "Does It Really Happen?" which opened the show. The 'Drama' studio version of this track has Chris Squire's great bass solo finishing off this driving song but for a handful of shows at the start of the 1980 tour Steve tacked on a solo of his own. Another is Squire's microphone being off (at 1:05:30) during his solo vocal stretch after the guitar solo in "We Can Fly From Here". The band awkwardly vamps through his absence until first the stage monitors and then the PA eventually get his mic feed. Chris, finally hearing himself properly amplified, thanks the sound crew with a sarcastic “Oh, thank you guys! Great!” The song "Parallels" from the 'Going For The One' album was in the Hartford show setlist but it was eventually dropped and only played a total of 18 times during the 66 dates of the 1980 Summer North American and Fall European 'Drama' tours. TAPER: MP Remaster of 'The Complete Dramatized Tour' by MP - A Kitty Lickin' Discs Production Silver CD in Japanese boot shop / My Yen / Buried Expense report / Unknown Transfer to PC (can't remember, too much Sake) / Goldwave / CD / EAC (secure) / Wavelab 4.0 / CDWAV / CD / EAC (secure) / SHN TAPER NOTES: Taken from the Highland Bootleg "The Complete Dramatized Tour" that I bought while on a business trip to Tokyo. I speed corrected it using Gold Wave. I remastered it by dehissing and EQing it with Wavelab. The buzzing noise on and off throughout appears to be part of the show and not a problem with the recording or the transfer. SETLIST: 1. There was also a lot of vehemence directed against Drama, an album whose line up set it apart from the Trooper/Generator divide. As a particular fan of this album and fed up with the abuse against it, I mailed Anthony Lawless one day thanking him for a post defending the album and nominating him a Knight of the Order of Panther; 'Panther' after the Drama cover art. With a label of their own, fans of Drama, Panthers, rapidly became more visible. They subsequently received supportive words from Chris Squire and Geoff Downes. The Panthers sought to defend Drama's place in the Yes canon, but how far could praise for the Drama line-up go? It was felt to be suicidal, for example, to argue that Horn's live vocals were superior to Anderson's. Thus was born the Panther Suicide Squad.
