Bill Peascod 1920 - 1965 was a miner, a climber and a painter. He is best known in Britain as a climber - he pioneered and named many of the Western Lake District climbs in the 50s. In Australia he is well known for his art. He emigrated to Oz in 1953 on a £10 ticket to be a lecturer in mining engineering in Wollongong south of Sydney and took up painting. He became very successful. His work is held in all the major Australian galleries, He won many awards, representing Australia in South Africa and USA and a travel prize to Europe and Japan. He returned to his native Cumbria in 1980 and ran painting courses from his farmhouse on the slopes of Skiddaw as well as climbing again. He died on a mountain in Wales in 1985. while climbing with Don Whillans and Chris Eilbeck. His grave in Bassenthwaite churchyard is marked with a large piece of granite on which is carved AT HOME IN THE STEEP PLACES
