Recent genetic analysis has uncovered a dramatic chapter in human deep history. Between roughly 930,000 and 813,000 years ago, the effective breeding population of our ancestors plunged to just about 1,280 individuals. This extreme bottleneck lasted for around 117,000 years. Scientists reached this conclusion by applying advanced computational models to genomic data from thousands of modern humans, revealing that nearly 98–99 percent of the ancestral human lineage was lost during that period. This bottleneck coincided with severe climate shifts in Africa during the Early–Middle Pleistocene transition. Longer glacial cycles, intensified droughts, and changes in ecosystems likely decimated habitats and food sources, reducing human populations to isolated pockets that barely survived. The gap in the fossil record between 950,000 and 650,000 years ago further supports this finding, suggesting human groups were both small and scattered. Although the tiny effective population size does not represent the entire living population, it shows how few individuals contributed genetically to future generations. Some researchers believe this bottleneck might have shaped the emergence of later human species and influenced critical genetic events, such as the chromosomal fusion that formed human chromosome 2. While questions remain about the exact causes and impacts, this discovery has deepened our understanding of humanity’s fragile and resilient evolutionary journey.
