I hope you enjoy this clip. It’s from my trip in 2021 to Daereungwon Tomb Complex. THE HISTORY Daereungwon is a collection of ancient tombs dating back to the Silla Empire (57BC to 935AD). It has been designated as a World Heritage Site. The area is designed as a park and is one of the main attractions of Gyeongju. The tombs in the park are the final resting places of kings and other high-ranking figures of the Silla Dynasty. The park was built during the Maribgan period of the the dynasty (between the 5th & 6th centuries). It was excavated in 1973. In total, there are 23 tombs of kings, queens and nobles. Cheonmachong Tomb (Ancient Tomb No. 155) is nicknamed ‘Tomb of the Heavenly Horse.’ It is characterized as a typical upper-class tomb of the Silla period. It is the only tomb which has been opened to the public. Cheonmachong Tomb contains a mini museum. It consists of a wooden coffin placed inside an underground chamber, mounded with boulders and earth. As Cheonmachong Tomb was excavated, a total of 11,500 artifacts were discovered. This included many golden and guilt-bronze items. Among them were various crowns and ornaments, too. ‘Cheonmado,’ the painting of ‘a heavenly horse on a Saddle Flap,’ was the most significant discovery. Therefore, the tomb was given its nickname, ‘Tomb of the Heavenly Horse.’ Asides from the Cheonmachong Tomb, there are numerous others. These include the tomb of King Michu, the 13th ruler of the Silla kingdom and ‘Hwangnam Daechong,’ nicknamed ‘Man and Woman Tomb.’ There’s a great photo zone, too and you can even hire a Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing) as a cultural experience! ERNA’S OPINIONS: The park is a great place to take a stroll and enjoy the beautiful views. If you don’t like crowds, don’t go on Korean national holidays. Wear some comfy shoes cos there’s a lot of walking involved.
