There are many systems that control the starts and stops of the compressor. The three most basic are the following: 1.- Domestic system. Thermostat controls the compressor. 2.- “MINIMUM LIQUID SAFETY” System. Thermostat controls the liquid solenoid valve. Low pressure switch controls the compressor. 3.- “PUMP-DOWN” or “STOP BY VACUUM DRAG” system. This is an electrical automation maneuver, a little more complex than the previous one, which controls the conditions necessary for the compressor to start and stop. Simultaneous conditions for starting: 1.- That there is a need to cool. 2.- That there is refrigerant gas pressure in the evaporator. Simultaneous stop conditions: 1.- That there is no need to cool. 2.- That there is no refrigerant gas pressure in the evaporator. Some advantages of “pump-down”: Extends the life of the compressor, since it reduces the number of starts and stops, at times when the chamber is opened too many times. Prevents refrigerant from accumulating in the compressor crankcase, avoiding the dreaded “wet start”. When the evaporator is empty, it facilitates the work of the defrost resistors, reducing electricity consumption. Protects the most sensitive elements of the low pressure sector from high pressures during periods of compressor shutdown. In cases of interruption of the electrical supply in water chillers, since the evaporator is empty most of the time, the risk of breakage due to freezing of the water in the exchanger decreases. If you do not have sufficient knowledge about electricity and risk prevention, these practices must be supervised by the teacher or qualified personnel. I hope it is useful to you.
