Carrie Fernandez is the second playable character in Castlevania 64. Go figure. She can jump farther than Reinhardt, but the trade-off is that her combat is much more mechanically awkward. Rather than one single whip swing at a time, Carrie has a magic projectile that can be charged up by holding down the B button, then releasing it. The projectile has a longer range than Reinhardt's whip and homes in on enemies at full charge, but cannot be used as frequently. While the projectile's homing properties might lead one to think that Carrie has an advantage against Castlevania 64's more evasive enemies, this is only sometimes the case. Against the werewolf, yes. Against the vampire or Cerberuses (Cerberi?), no. Vampires have a bad habit of infinitely dodging the projectile as it tries to chase them, and Cerberus just moves too fast to be hit. For these reasons, subweapon usage and Jewel conservation are more important for Carrie than Reinhardt, despite her default attack having a longer range. Carrie's exclusive stages, the Tower of Science and Tower of Sorcery, are some of my favorites in the game. The Tower of Sorcery in particular is a highlight, the height of C64's excellent atmosphere mixed with the most brutal platforming in the game. Gallons and gallons of hand sweat. Carrie also has two exclusive boss fights, Fernandez Warrior and Actrise. Both are somewhat flawed and repetitive; the Fernandez mirror fight almost always ends up feeling like a DPS race (much like the Rosa fight for Reinhardt) and Actrise can be defeated primarily by running in circles. However, I would praise the Actrise fight for its pre-fight dialogue, which is in my opinion the best in the game. Overall, I would say Reinhardt is more fun to play since his combat is more responsive, but Carrie is worth it if only to experience the Tower of Sorcery. She also has a much easier time with Dracula - at least, the first two phases. Done on emulator, simple64.
