(3 Jun 2016) 'LOWRIDERS' CAST ON COOLEST CARS Peruvian director Ricardo de Montreuil may have made a film about decked out, meticulously maintained, low-to-the ground cars called "Lowriders," but says he had little interest in cars before the project. "Actually, really no. I wasn't until I started making the film and then I started learning about the cars and I was so impressed you know about ... these cars are gorgeous. You know the level of detail that goes into building these cars is insane," he said. The film's star, Gabriel Chavarria, was raised in a family of car lovers, but said his interests were elsewhere. "My brothers are definitely into cars, yeah. Yeah, but I grew up playing sports. So I was always busy running around, you know scraping my knees and stuff," he said. Chavarria said he hasn't owned any cool cars, but has his sights set on one in particular. "I do want my Lamborghini Murcielago though. I'm trying to get that. I am a car lover, yeah. I'm a big fan of cars for sure," he said. "Sons of Anarchy" actor Theo Rossi was once a car and motorcycle enthusiast. "You know what? I grew up in New York City. I live in New York City again now. I lived here for 16 years. When I was here I was a motorcycle and car guy. I'm now a subway guy. I'm a subway guy. I like subways with graffiti on them," he said. Rossi's first car was a 1968 Mustang. "With a 289 engine that I wheeled home, I pushed home with my friends," added Rossi. "I bought it for $500. And then my second car was a '74 Cutlass Supreme. My next car after that was like a '64 and a half Mustang. So I always bought old cars and rebuilt them and then I stopped and then I started taking subways and taxis and then I moved to L.A. and became kind of a car (guy), but more of a motorcycle guy because you get around here a lot faster on a motorcycle. You risk life and limb, but you get around a lot faster." "Supergirl" star Melissa Benoist admitted that she's not all that interested in cars. But after working on the film, Benoist said she would love to own a lowrider. "They're beautiful. Yes, one of those convertibles. The Chevy Impalas, they're amazing. These cars are, down to like under the hood, even the engine like has embellished metal details and engravings. And yeah, they're pretty beautiful. I would want one," she said. "Lowriders," which opened the Los Angeles Film Festival Wednesday, also stars Eva Longoria and Demian Bichir.
