Full up-close action of a Boeing 737 Classic! The Sierra Pacific Airlines 737-500 fleet! On October 13, 2025 Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport was treated to 2 rare visitors when Sierra Pacific Airlines sent their entire fleet (which consisted of two 25+ year old Boeing 737-500s) to CLT for a military charter flight to El Paso, Texas! While roughly 70 Boeing 737-500s remain in service worldwide, there are less than 10 (possibly less than 5) still in active service around the U.S. And to add to the excitement about seeing a very rare U.S aircraft type in CLT, Sierra Pacific’s fleet consists of 1 735 equipped with winglets, and another without winglets, so it truly marked off seeing both versions of the aircraft off the bucket list! • • Aircraft History: The two 737-500’s in Sierra Pacific’s fleet are registered as N708S (the wingletless one) and N709S (the one with winglets. N708S began service in August 1995 with Luxair as LX-LGR and flew with the airline for 5 years before going to British Airways as G-GFFE in June 2000. In March of 2009 it went to Ogier Fiduciary Services which was probably a company for selling the aircraft or using it for training. It didn’t go to a new airline until Sierra Pacific Airlines picked it up in August 2014 and eventually started service with the aircraft in September 2016 as N708S! N709S is nearly 29 years old and started service with Maersk Air in March 1997 as OY-API and flew with the airline for 8 years before going to Sterling Airlines in September 2005. It later went to Dniproavia as UR-DND in January 2008 and the Ukraine International Airlines in April 2013 at UR-GBC. It eventually was picked up by Sierra Pacific in June 2017 and entered service in February 2018 as N709S! —————— Airline History: Sierra Pacific Airlines is an American charter airline based in Tucson, Arizona that operates passenger charter flights (best known for military charters) in the U.S. The airlines was founded in 1970 as Trans Sierra Airlines in California and was renamed Sierra Pacific Airlines in 1971. The airline used to be more popular back in the day operating small commercial passenger service but now just does charter flights between the 2 737-500s they have. —————— These two flights into Charlotte were for some kind of military personnel transport to El Paso Biggs Field Airport. I was at the Wilson Air Center watching the action around N709S with the loading of bags and boarding of passengers, all of which I didn’t film because I didn’t want to interfere with military operations (and after all, I was just there for the plane and not who was on it). The first flight to arrive was N708S operating as flight SI708 which was scheduled to land at 2:22PM and landed on time. But it was scheduled to leave at 3:10PM and didn’t leave till after N709S at 5:13PM. N709S was operating as flight SI709 which was scheduled to land at 3:26PM and landed exactly on time as well. It was scheduled to leave at 4:10 but left at 4:58. The reason for the delay was waiting for N708S to get a minor mechanical issue with the right wing fixed and both aircraft wanted to leave around the same time. • • Overall this was a very exciting experience and I’m glad I was able to cross a major aircraft off my bucket list, and another 737 classic as I finally caught a 737-200 back in June this year as well! I find it very interesting how the 737-500 looks identical to the -600 when it do have winglets, and identical to the -700 when it has winglets! __________________________________________ Check out my other CLT Planespotting videos from the past few years available through my CLT Airport playlist: / playlist list=PLNMbZRjj2shqKVcsD2ov3gaieCghvr- u4&si=3vuVCWZREIP48ykg CLT Airport Trip Reports: • • Delta Airlines Boeing 717-200 Trip Report ... si=UwkaGPUh3xmFITM6 • • *The RAREST/ OLDEST Plane in American’s Fl... nihaCHHYzFoc • • *Complete Tour* CLT Concourse A Expansion ... si=2VisPSxaЗstVfMVQ • / bllr6jdryqo si=e7yBSWDshqQJSAnG #planespotting #boeing #737500 #737 #b737 #takeoff #aviation #clt #charlotte #charlottenc #airport #aviation #classic #vintage #aviationhistory #aviationlovers #flight #planespotter #avgeek #aviationdaily #aviationgeek #takeoff #pilot #pilotlife #airplane #plane 0:00 N708S on The Ramp + N709S Arrival 2:20 N709S on The Ramp 5:06 N709S Prep. to Taxi-out + Engine Start 10:00 N709S Taxi-out + Takeoff 13:03 N708S Takeoff
