Barry Gleeson 'The songs of James Joyce' 01.10.2011 at Cork City Library. Cork Folk Festival. PLEASE VISIT THE LINKS: http://www.corkfolkfestival.com/ 32nd Cork Folk Festival - 29th September to 3rd October 2011, Cork, Ireland. http://www.corkfolkfestival.com/ A great programme of folk and traditional music. International gathering of iconic Folk Musicians. The opening night, of the long running Festival was on Thursday September 13th 1979 at Douglas GAA Club; (there was no Festival in 1988) Put together from year to year purely on a voluntary basis by a dedicated group of enthusiasts, aided by major sponsorship, and a combination of various sponsors and supporters, including those who contribute financially to the cost of staging the festival, Cork City Council, the Arts Council, Fáilte Ireland, Beamish Irish Stout and CIT, and the Evening Echo and C103FM for support through media sponsorship . It's endurance is a tribute to the energy and labour of it's workers. it's appropriate to acknowledge the voluntary organising committee, and also the many volunteer workers who take charge of doors, organise artist accommodation, look after publicity, liaise with artists, and numerous other things involved in making such an event possible year on year.Particular recognition for Jim Walsh, Chairman and someone who has been a vital cog in Festival organisation since that very first year, long-serving Festival Director William "Hammy" Hammond, and also Timmy "the Brit" McCarthy, the inspirational figure behind the Festival's inception, as well as it's original Director/Secretary. The Festival included 'T with the Maggies' whose members are some of Ireland's finest traditional singers featuring Moya Brennan of Clannad, Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill from the Bothy Band, Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill of Skara Brae and Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh of Altan. There is a celebration of the musical lives of two special people, Sean Ó Riada and Seamus Creagh. In honour of Seamus and Sean there are two unique concerts at the new Triskel Christchurch venue featuring a host of talented musicians.Other concerts will feature an international line up of iconic musicians including, Julie Felix, Sons of the Delta, Cherish the Ladies, Katell Keineg, Roy Bailey, the intercultural group Convergence Ensemble and Billy Sutton & Graham Wells who travelled from Newfoundland to play at the concert for Seamus Creagh.
