The bad blood started in the previous year's playoffs but re-ignited the week before when Martin Havlat high-sticked Mark Recchi, leaving Havlat with a match penalty and a suspension. Play continued, with fans booing that there were no more fights, but after a check, Mark Recchi fought Bryan Smolinski, while John LeClair paired off with Wade Redden.
