Into Sandy's City - it's a great tune, isn't it? You'll find this masterpiece of pc-games-music when playing Doom II map 9. The track played great on soundcards featuring the Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 FM -or the identical LS262 clone in this comparison. But when i played the tune with the the S3 Sonic Vibe, i was excited. Great tune to demonstrate the S3FM! Some words to the soundcards: The Diamond card is quite rare - it is basically a rebranded Avance Logic ALS007 soundcard and works with the very same drivers, but it features a nice coloured and quality PCB with dual 386 op-amps instead of the usual 2025 stereo amplfier cirquity. Anyway, i'd use the line-out to prevent noise - and the result was a clean reacord. As any ALS007 card it features an external Yamaha YMF262 OPL3 FM-Synth - which is labled as LS212. The card is a 16bit PnP ISA-soundcard and it is one of the few cards offering compatibility to Soundblaster 16 instead of just Sondblaster Pro. Today, Avance Logic technologies were found on Realtek audio solutions because Realtek once overtook Avance Logic. The S3 Sonic Vibes was one of the first PCI-soundcards, and it is the one and only made by the well known VGA-cardmaker S3. The card has legacy-drivers for MS-DOS, but they'll use EMM memory. The good thing is that you can configure it to access the wavetable in dos. The wavetable uses a FAT-Labs waveset and you can turn on or off chorus and reverb in windows. Anyway, the drivers both bought me some trouble, in windows 98 as well as in DOS. The FM for example claimed to be OPL3 compatible and is in most games, but the attentive listener might have noticed that in DOOM2 it just worked fine in OPL2 mode (mono only). The S3-FM offers very interesting and unique sound in comparison to the other clones, and the card is rare today. So i was quite happy when i found this one recently. The game: Doom II - Hell on Earth - ID-Software, released in 1994. II run the game on my testbench with an Intel Pentium 133mhz CPU and MS-DOS 6.2. The record i made directly out of the game. I just adjusted the mixer settings and used the analog line-out. There was no post-processing to the audio but the fade-in/fade out. I recorded it using Audacity and export the audio to 256kb/s stereo mp3 using the lame encoder plugin. Please listen with headphones for best experience! Stay tuned and follow for weekly records.
