(10 Jun 2016) As Europe's attention focusses once again on France and the UEFA Euro 2016 football championship that kicked off there on Friday, locals watching the opening game in one bar in a residential area of Paris remembered another darker event that shone a spotlight on their city. Le Carillon is a bar that was one of the locations attacked by gunmen during the 13 November terrorist attacks that shook France to its core last year. As the contest opened with a match between France and Romania, those who turned out to watch the game at Le Carillon spoke of remembering what happened on that evening. "Where I stand is exactly the same place where those people who were attacked on 13th November were", said one bargoer. The Euro 2016 championship is taking place against the backdrop of heightened security and a state of emergency that has remained in place since the attacks last year. Speaking on Friday, the French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve said that some 90,000 security agents are mobilised around stadiums, fan zones and streets "for optimal security conditions". The measure was designed to prevent a repeat of the kind of attacks that left 15 people dead at Le Carillon, who were among 130 killed in coordinated attacks around Paris that night.
