Dr Alex J Mitchell discusses the links between smoking and mental illness. He provides an up-to-date evidence based overview of this topic. Smoking rates are 2-3x higher in those with mental ill health, quit rates are lower and receipt of smoking advice in this population lower. Smoking may be a risk factor for later depression, schizophrenia and even dementia. Although success rates are modest, with help such as clinician advice and nicotine replacement therapy chances of quitting and staying smoke free are 5-10x rates of quitting without help. Dr Alex J Mitchell is consultant in liaison psychiatry and psycho-oncology at University of Leicester. He has worked in mental health for 20 years (for more information see the links below). --------------- Dr Alex J Mitchell Links --------------- His twitter feed is www.twitter.com/_alexjmitchell His biography is at www.psycho-oncology.info/biography.htm His website is www.psycho-oncology.info
