A year ago, a man was walking in the woods. And found an old rusty ax. He turned to me with a question - is it possible to restore this ax, or is it better to throw it in a landfill? Seeing this rusty shard of history, I decided to get to work. Inspiration came to me. I decided to do something Viking style. Here's what happened in the end. The drawing on the ax was made by electrochemical etching (using a welding machine) and etching in a 5% solution of nitric acid. I wish you a pleasant viewing. This video is not instructional. Everything shown in the video is not a role model. For those who want to support the channel: / kirill_runz A few clarifications for the video: 00:50 Ax after thermal hardening. Initially, the edge of the point was chipped off the ax. This could indicate incorrect heat treatment. So I decided to re-harden the steel. 01:28 I apply a primer (paint) to the ax. Before painting, I made a surface etching of the metal. The paint adheres better to the etched surface. 01:41 Sketch of the drawing. I drew by hand. All images and characters are taken from thematic materials on the Internet. 01:47 To transfer the sketch of the drawing to the product, I use lavsan tracing paper and a pencil with a thin rod. 04:08 Steel game with a hilt. With this needle, I clean off the paint on the ax in the places where the metal should be etched. 04:51 Medical plaster. With the help of it, I additionally protect the metal from etching. 05:08 Metal spoke. It is needed to connect a current source. 05:21 Water. 05:43 Copper plate. 07:07 Technical characteristics of the welding machine. 07:47 I rinse the ax with water. 09:05 A mark from zone hardening is visible on the ax. The darker part of the ax is where the metal is hardened. 09:35 Nail polish. 10:44 Nitric acid solution 5%. 11:15 a.m. Baking soda (alkali). I use soda to neutralize acid. I wash the ax in water. 11:55 Paint over more exposed metal. 12:25 Re-immerse the ax in nitric acid 5% (after etching, I wash it again in a solution of water + soda). 13:23 I use a special liquid for blackening metal. 14:06 I use a lubricant to protect the metal from oxidation.
