The piriformis is a thick band of muscle that travels from the front of your tail bone to the outer aspect of your femur. The muscle belly is found in the buttock region. Just deep to this muscle flows the sciatic nerve. Normally the sciatic nerve is found just underneath the piriformis muscle. However in some people the sciatic nerve may actually pierce the piriformis muscle. Piriformis Syndrome occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed by the piriformis muscle. This compression leads to the symptoms of sciatica. Unlike lumbar disc herniations, piriformis syndrome is considered to be a peripheral nerve entrapment that is in the buttock. Its literally a pain in the butt! Also unlike lumbar disc herniations, most people are comfortable with bending over, sneezing or straining. Instead, activities like sitting with crossed legs, sitting with a wallet in the back pocket, or doing exercises like squats or lunges can flare up your sciatica. That said, it is important to see a health professional to get properly assessed and diagnosed for a proper treatment plan. SUBSCRIBE For New Exercise Videos Every Week!
