A heart stent, also known as a coronary stent, is a medical device used to treat narrow or blocked coronary arteries in a condition called coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD occurs when cholesterol, fatty deposits, and other substances build up in the arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle, reducing blood flow to the heart. This can lead to chest pain (angina) or even a heart attack if the blood flow is severely restricted. A heart stent is typically a small, expandable mesh-like tube made of metal (usually stainless steel or a similar material) or, in some cases, a biodegradable polymer. There are two main types of stents: Bare-metal stents (BMS): These stents are plain metal tubes without any special coatings or drugs. They are designed to provide structural support to keep the coronary artery open after a procedure called angioplasty, which involves inflating a balloon to compress the plaque and widen the artery. The stent is then placed in the treated area to help prevent the artery from narrowing again. Drug-eluting stents (DES): These stents are coated with medications that are slowly released into the surrounding tissue over time. These drugs help reduce the risk of restenosis, which is the re-narrowing of the artery due to scar tissue formation in response to the stent placement. DES are often preferred in many cases because they tend to have lower rates of restenosis compared to bare-metal stents. The procedure to insert a heart stent is known as percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) or coronary angioplasty with stent placement. During this procedure: A thin, flexible tube called a catheter is inserted through a blood vessel in the groin or wrist. The catheter is guided to the coronary artery that is blocked or narrowed. A small balloon at the tip of the catheter is inflated to compress the plaque against the artery walls, widening the artery. After the artery is widened, the stent is positioned at the site of the blockage and expanded using the balloon. The stent remains in place permanently to keep the artery open. The balloon is deflated and withdrawn, leaving the stent in place to maintain adequate blood flow. Heart stents have revolutionized the treatment of coronary artery disease and are commonly used to alleviate symptoms, such as chest pain, and to prevent heart attacks. However, it's essential to follow a healthy lifestyle, take prescribed medications, and attend regular follow-up appointments with a healthcare provider to manage heart health after receiving a stent.
