The Grace Principle March 15, 2026 Over the next few weeks will look at some principles I have found in the bible that I hope will help us stay married and enjoy it Grace Principle, Priority Principle, Gravity Principle, Heart principle, Practice Principle Our marriage is a display of the relationship of Jesus and the church – His bride – This was by the design of God Staying married is not about staying in love, feeling the feelings, being romantic but is about staying in covenant - This is the hard part! Our natural response to that is “That is really hard!” Of course it is but it is necessary ! The Groundwork for Grace Genesis 2:24, 25; Gen 3:1-7, 21 Perfect One flesh union Gen 2:24 Before the fall gives the foundation for marriage after the fall - Security, trust, unity – covenant The result of the union Gen 2:25 Naked and unashamed Broken union Gen 3:1-7 Adam/Eve declared independence form God and the first thing that occurred was their eyes were opened 2:25 is gone because of 3:7 Their answer to close the gap of who they used to be to who they are now was to cover themselves Their perfect oneness (union) with God and each other was destroyed by their disobedience (sin) God’s answer to close the gap was to cloth them as well but differently 1. Instead of concealing God confesses 2. He is also giving a witness of His eternal fix for the problem that will come someday God makes the clothing with skins – shedding of blood Our marriage is to be a reflection of the relationship of Christ and His Bride. The central theme of the story of Christ and the church/bride is the GOSPEL OF GRACE Therefore our marriage should be a reflection of the GOSPEL The Gospel of Jesus Colossians 2:11-14 Our condition God’s intentions God’s Plan This benefit has been given to every person who will come and accept it by faith! If you have come to Jesus ALL of your debt has been paid in full! Forgiven all of it!! The sea of forgetfulness! This becomes WHO YOU ARE! And because it is who I am I must then EXTEND the same to my spouse The Gospel of Marriage Colossians 3:12-17 I think it is key that we understand that all of the commands to us as Christians are part of the marriage relationship also Love one another (John 13:34; this command occurs at least 16 times) Be devoted to one another (Romans 12:10) Honor one another above yourselves (Romans 12:10) Live in harmony with one another (Romans 12:16) Build up one another (Romans 14:19; 1 Thessalonians 5:11) Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other (Galatians 5:26) Do not slander one another (James 4:11) Don't grumble against each other (James 5:9) Phil 2 one mind, one accord, lowliness of mind hold the other above yourself nothing through selfish ambition or conceit
