Russia holds military drills with Belarus amid tensions with Nato

Russia's defence ministry on Tuesday released footage of joint military drills in Belarus and manoeuvres at sea involving the Northern Fleet warships and land drills in Russia. Russia's joint exercises with ally Belarus and other drills near Ukraine have fanned fears Russia may be poised to invade Ukraine, something Moscow has repeatedly denied planning. Although Moscow has denied ever planning to attack Ukraine, it has demanded legally binding guarantees from the United States and NATO that Kyiv will not be allowed to join the military bloc. Washington and Brussels have so far refused to make such pledges. On Monday Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told President Vladimir Putin that some of the country's military drills had already ended, and others were coming to a close.
