The song is Dennis’s ode to upcountry Maui, a place piece sung with the calm pulse and clear melody he was loved for. Official lyrics are included in this video. 🌺Rev. Dennis D. K. Kamakahi (1953–2014) was a Hawaiian slack key guitarist, composer, and storyteller whose songs have become part of everyday life in Hawaiʻi. He joined Eddie Kamae’s Sons of Hawaiʻi in the 1970s, where his writing flourished, contributing modern standards such as “Kōkeʻe,” “Pua Hone,” and “Wahine ʻIlikea.” He was inducted into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame in 2009, and his work was part of multiple GRAMMY-winning slack key projects. Dennis began on ʻukulele at age three and took up kī hōʻalu at ten, later mentoring players and songwriters across the islands through workshops, school visits, and countless concerts. His music also reached film and television audiences, helping introduce new listeners worldwide to the sound and poetry of Hawaiian slack key.
