(18 Mar 1996) Mandarin/Nat Pro Chinese protesters have burned a U-S flag outside the American Institute in Taiwan's capital Taipei. They were Angry the U-S has sent aircraft carriers to the waters off Taiwan as China resumes war games in the area,. Almost 100 people attended the rally, waving banners and chanting "Yankee go home!" These protesters, members of the tiny Taiwan Labor Party, are furious with what they claim is American meddling in Chinese internal affairs. The U-S has dispatched two carrier groups - the U-S-S Independence and the U-S-S Nimitz - to Taiwan. The demonstrators burned a U-S flag and a model of Uncle Sam. Employees at the American Institute, the de facto U-S embassy in Taiwan, appeared surprised by the demonstrators' show of anger. The protesters also delivered a letter to the Institute, calling for the U-S to stop the interfering in Chinese and Taiwanese affairs. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) We are protesting against the coming of the USS aircraft carriers Independence and Nimitz to the Taiwan Straits, creating tension between Taiwan and China. Although the relationship was unclear during the past 40 years, they were in the process of improving. The US interference has further intensified the tensions between the Straits. The Labor Party is a minor political organization in Taiwan, and has no official candidate in the presidential race.
