The maxillary artery branches off from the external carotid artery, just deep to the neck of the mandible. The external carotid artery is one of the two main divisions of the common carotid artery - the other one being the internal carotid artery. The maxillary artery is involved in distributing the blood flow to the upper and lower jaw bones (maxilla and mandible respectively), the deep facial areas, nasal cavity and cerebral dura mater. As a result, it is considered to be a blood vessel supporting both soft and hard tissues in the maxillofacial region.
