White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt will brief reporters Tuesday afternoon as voters head to the polls in several key elections in New Jersey, New York, Virginia and California. President Trump has weighed in on several of the contests in recent weeks, including urging voters to show support for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral race; GOP gubernatorial nominee Jack Ciattarelli in New Jersey and Virginia state Attorney General Jason Miyares the lieutenant governor’s race. He has not openly endorsed Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears in her gubernatorial race against former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.). Lawmakers are hopeful that Tuesday’s elections can serve as a turning point for the government shutdown, which at 35 days is poised to become the longest in U.S. history. The president, to no avail, has pressed the Senate GOP to do away with the filibuster rule that requires 60 votes to move legislation. The Trump administration is also facing questions over its military strikes in the Caribbean and increased immigration enforcement efforts across the country. The event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. EDT. Watch the live video above.
