Young Palestinian boy Medhat Qudeih dies of polio in southern Gaza

Loved ones bid farewell to Medhat Qudeih, a young Palestinian boy who died from polio after spending eight days in intensive care, due to the lack of vaccine and treatment available in the Gaza Strip. “Because of the closure of the crossings, because of malnutrition, Medhat is the first case of quadriplegia. And if conditions don't change and they open the crossings and let in vaccines and treatment for this disease, then Medhat won't be the first nor the last case, there will be many cases after Medhat,” cries his aunt. Israel has imposed a near-total blockade on food and humanitarian aid into Gaza since March, including the entry of medical supplies. Qudeih’s death was the first from polio disease recorded in southern Gaza. It comes as new research by The Lancet showed that diseases resistant to antibiotics are prevalent across the besieged Palestinian enclave.
