I've been working on my punishes for Rey Dau, so I'm proud of this one. Hunting exercises monsters have a little bit more HP than I would like, so if this was a regular low HP roll investigation it would be an easy sub4. Even with almost 400 hunts against him, I always felt that I was missing a few punishes with the GRT by defaulting to the Charge Counter, like the windows after the second slow wing swipe when he is on the ground, and a few single mid thrusts that I can land between attacks in his combos. Rey Dau overall is one of my favorite fights, so I'm happy to keep practicing it. MATCH UP TIPS: The best tip for Rey is to understand that his moveset is very limited and repetitive, and it's very easy to predict what he is going to do, some examples: If he is enraged and on the ground, after his basic combo of fast wing swipe, fast wing swipe, slow wing swipe, slow wing swipe, slow motion wing punch, he always jumps back flying and does the railgun attack, unless he flinches or switches agro (thats one of the reasons I don't use Palico against him) If he is enraged and flying, after the two wing swipes, the ones where he flies towards you and drags his wings on the ground, if he lands on the second one, he always does the railgun attack. If he doesn't land, he does the backflip. And if you flinch him during this combo, the combo resets and he stays locked trying to complete it. He has little recovery frames after his enrage roar, so if he uses a fast attack like the fast wing swipe or any of his head attacks, you won't have enough time to do a lv3 double counter thrust, so after your preferred roar punish, you should always poke only twice and go into charge counter position at a level 2. Also, this one is kinda basic, but his legs hitzones are terrible, so you should only hit his head and wings, if he has a tempered scar on one of the legs, just ignore it. The damage you lose from trying to open it up is not worth it for a 10 second topple. Thumbnail photo by Karl The Krab: https://x.com/KarlTheKrab
