A very special week for Zhang Lu 張露. January 21st marked the day she was born in 1932. Today, January 26th , marks the day of her passing in 2009, at the age of 77. Zhang Lu was much more than a great singer of songs, she was a music researcher with an interest in all cultures and styles. She had a particular interest in Japanese music as this song shows. The original song was called "Star of Itoshia" (いとしあの星) which means 'Beloved'. Hear it here:    • いとしあの星   It was recorded in 1940 by the legendary Hamako Watanabe(渡辺はま子) It was composed by Ryoichi Hattori (服部良一) 1907-1993 with lyrics by poet and writer Hachiro Sato(1903-1973) Their details are under comments. Zhang Lu's are later in the notes. Yoshiko Yamaguchi (Li Xianglan) was in the 1939 film "Song of the White Orchid". It is Fang Bian's(方忭) Chinese lyrics which Zhang Lu sings up to 1m36. After an instrumental break, she sings part of Hachiro's Japanese lyrics to conclude her beautiful version. Hone mo inochi mo kono tochi ni. Min'na uzumeyo to warai-gao. Zhang Lu was born in Suzhou, China on January 21,1932. She moved to Shanghai aged four, following the death of her father. In the mid-1940s, a neighbour, who was a broadcaster, recommended that she perform at a local radio station. She began singing songs by her idol, Zhou Xuan. 'I had to sing her songs. She was such a big star. She was not just a singer - she was a movie star,' Chang said in 2003. From her early teens she was entertaining audiences in clubs and on the radio to help support her family. Her sister Xiao Lu was also a fine singer. In the late 1940s, Chang, signed with EMI, and released a string of hits. Music industry veteran Chan Fai-hung said "'Chang, together with other singers from the 1930s and '40s, were the pioneers of contemporary Chinese pop music. They not only performed in Mandarin but they also sang in English, bringing in jazz and swing music to this part of the world." Zhang Lu moved to Hong Kong in 1952, captivating the people there. In 1959, she married musician Ollie Delfino from Singapore, and thad 2 sons, Orlando and Alex. She retired in 1975, and moved to Canada in 1980, but returned to Hong Kong in 1985 to be there for her son Alex's blossoming musical career. She occasionally appeared in public to perform with her sons. In November 2008, she made her last trip to Shanghai with her son, Alex. She passed away in Ruttonjee Hospital on January 26, 2009, New Year's Day. She was cremated, and her ashes buried in a Shanghai cemetery which she had selected a few years earlier, alongside celebrities such as Theresa Teng. Zhang Lu once said "My life can be simply divided into 3 phases, the first one is singers stage, the 2nd phase is the mother, and now it is to be myself. "
