The book of Zephaniah was written in Judah during the reign of King Josiah, around 640–609 BC, a period just before Josiah’s major religious reforms. Although outward reform was beginning, Zephaniah exposes how deeply idolatry, syncretism, violence, and complacency still infected the nation beneath the surface. Internationally, the once-dominant Assyrian Empire was decaying but not yet fallen, creating a tense moment where judgment felt imminent but not yet realized. Zephaniah speaks directly into this window, announcing both the near-term judgment on Judah and the nations and the future hope of purification and restoration for a humble remnant who would survive the coming upheaval. “The Day Is Near” is set in the late seventh century BC, during the reign of King Josiah, when Judah stood at the edge of judgment despite early reform efforts. The song reflects Zephaniah’s warning that idolatry, covenant-breaking, and moral complacency still defined the nation, even as many assumed God would neither intervene nor judge. It also captures the international backdrop of the time, when the Assyrian Empire was visibly weakening yet still oppressive, making its coming collapse both shocking and inevitable. The song treats judgment as imminent and unavoidable, portraying the Day of the Lord as a covenant reckoning that would fall first on Judah and then ripple outward to the surrounding nations. [VERSE 1] (Zephaniah 1:4–5) I will stretch My hand against this land, Cut off Baal by My command. The priests who serve on broken ground, Their names erased, no trace is found. Those who bow to host of skies, Swearing both by Me and lies. [VERSE 2] (Zephaniah 1:15, 1:17) A day of wrath, a day of fear, A day of ruin drawing near. Darkness deep, distress and pain, Anguish poured like heavy rain. [BRIDGE] (Zephaniah 1:12) Comforted, corrupt, and blind, They sin convinced He’s left mankind. They lived as if He would not see, His wrath for them – a certainty. [VERSE 3] (Zephaniah 1:15, 1:17) I will bring distress on man, They will walk like blind men stand. Their blood poured out upon the ground, Their flesh like dust, no life is found. [CHORUS] (Zephaniah 1:14, 1:18) The day is near. The day is here. No silver saves when truth draws near. The whole earth burns by jealous flame, Consumed in fire by His name. [VERSE 4] (Zephaniah 1:2–3, 1:9) I will sweep away from the land, Man and beast by My command. Kings brought low, the proud erased, Violence judged, no hiding place. [PRE-CHORUS] Nations rise and nations fall, The Lord alone stands over all. [VERSE 5] (Zephaniah 2:4–15) Gaza falls, Ashkelon bare, Moab weeps in ruined air. Assyria silent — a decaying crown, Nineveh laid waste, the proud bowed down. [CHORUS] (Zephaniah 2:11) The day is near. The earth will shake. No power stands He will not break. From coast to coast His fire will run, Until His judgment is done.
