I do a lot of things in my excavator that can be a little hard on the bodywork. The fiberglass covers that make up the body of Kobe, my SK30UR mini-excavator, have seen better days. Over the years they have cracked and broken in many places. I've fixed them a few times with riveted-on aluminum splice plates, and while it does lend a pretty great Frankenstein's monster aesthetic, it doesn't really hold up. My worst cover, the lower right-hand side, has finally smashed completely through and is, for all practical purposes, beyond repair. So today's project is to make a new one from heavy steel. I go in without much of a plan and just kind of make it up as I go along, and it goes along great. By the end of the video I've got a super skookum side cover that'll protect Kobe's delicate innards from errant sticks and flying debris far better than even a factory-fresh new cover would. Enjoy the build.
