Saenuri Party splits, thrusting Korean politics into new multi-party era

After months of friction between the two main factions of the ruling Saenuri Party,... 29 representatives have made it official -- announcing they have left to form their own conservative party. The split has caused a shift in Korea's political landscape not seen since 1990... just months ahead of the presidential election. Park Ji-won tells us more. The group of 29 lawmakers is led by former Saenuri leader Kim Moo-sung and former floor leader Yoo Seong-min. They're the most high-profile figures among the so-called "non-pro-President Park" faction,... a group of lawmakers that's been critical of the president and her policies. The split between the factions reached the breaking point earlier this month following the impeachment vote against President Park. The group plans to launch its own party by January 24th,... and has already designated four-term lawmaker Joo Ho-young as its floor leader. It says the new party will have conservative values,... including a strong emphasis on the rule of law and a free and fair market economy,... but with a greater focus on reform and welfare. "Where the Saenuri Party is pulled down,.. we will build a new home for a truly conservative party,... aiming to make a warm-hearted community." In a parting shot,... the group accused the Saenuri Party of losing the true value of conservatism,... saying it only protects the establishment. In response, the ruling Saenuri Party issued a statement,... apologizing to the public for failing to meet the people's expectations.. and vowing reform. The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea criticized the split,... expressing doubt about whether the new party will be a carbon copy of the current one. Still, the party vowed to work with its counterparts. "It could be confusing to have four main parties. But the Democratic Party will work with the other parties to keep things running smoothly." The minor opposition People's Party welcomed the system,... but said the new party shares responsibility for the Choi Soon-sil scandal. "We hope all parties participate in constitutional revision to open an era of cooperative politics." With the departure,... the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea is the largest party in parliament, with 121 lawmakers. The Saenuri Party is now a distant second, with 99, followed by the minor opposition People's Party, with 38. Once formed, the new conservative party will have at least 30 lawmakers. -- the 29 from today and three-term lawmaker Kim Yong-tae,... who left the Saenuri Party about a month ago. "With the new party entering the landscape of Korean politics, no one is sure how the dynamics will change... ahead of next year's presidential election. Park Ji-won, Arirang News."
