(17 Dec 1995) English/Nat An estimated 400 U-S airmen and women are settling down at their base in the small village of Taszar in southern Hungary, preparing for the arrival of more NATO troops. Braving ice-cold conditions and heavy fog the advance team has built temporary huts for communications facilities and NATO soldiers who will stay in Taszar en route to Bosnia. Troops say the freezing weather has not helped the feeling of isolation. Blanketed in snow and heavy fog, Taszar is a lonely place for the U-S air men and women already on the ground. They're working hard to prepare the way for the bulk of NATO troops scheduled to start moving into Hungary Sunday. If all goes to plan, 20 thousand U-S peacekeepers will cross the country en route to Tuzla in Bosnia in coming weeks. A part of them will stay at Taszar or nearby Kaposvar for a short period, while others will only have a stopover. UPSOUND: "Copy, wind, zero four zero at two knots, visibility 400 metres, plus fog" SOUNDBITE: "I've been here for some time, I was part of the first advance team in here, I remember when we landed it was very cold, wasn't used to that coming from California" SUPER CAPTION: Jack Ramsay, airman The airmen say there's already a strong feeling of being cut-off from the outside world. SOUNDBITE: "Personally I'm hoping they do sign the peace agreement, I don't even know whether they've done it yet, I have not been able to see the news, you know getting news into here has been very hard, um, the crew came in this morning brought us some new papers for us but I haven't been able to sit down and read it at all, so news to the outside world right now has become scarce" SUPER CAPTION: Jack Ramsay, airman To date, 15-hundred G-Is have arrived at the logistics base of Taszar and Kaposvar. Vehicles and trains continue to arrive carrying equipment and servicemen. And plans for President Clinton to visit Tuzla in the New Year have given an added incentive to the troops. SOUNDBITE: "I think that's great that the President shows support that we're over here. I think that's real strong, and as far as esprit de corps and having respect for our President when he comes over here it would be nice to see him, to meet him for the very first time, I've never met the man before" SUPER CAPTION: Senior Airman Leapisina Weather permitting, about 180 construction troops from the U-S Navy based in Spain are expected to fly into Taszar Sunday (December 17). From Taszar they'll move south to the Croatian side of the Sava River where they will be building a pontoon bridge to link Croatia to Bosnia north of Tuzla.
