Firstly, a quick recap of how the soroban works. The Earthly beads are worth 1 -- on this soroban they are yellow; and the heavenly beads are worth 5 -- on this soroban they're green. Now we get to the fun part -- learning how to add up. There are a few simple rules and once you learn them you'll hopefully realise just how cool and simple the soroban is. The first thing to do is to learn how to add 5. Now often, you'll just be able to flick the heavenly bead down. But what about when the heavenly bead is already activated. Let's start with 6. How do we add 5 to this? So here's the first, very simple trick. Another way of adding 5 is to add 10 and subtract 5. So to add 10 I simply need to add one in the next column --remember the beads here are worth 10 -- bang. And now I need to subtract 5 -- bang. And that is how you add 5. If you can, just move this bead down, but if you can't you add 1 to this column (to add 10) and take 5 from this.
