When you’re replacing the battery in your car or truck, is a flooded battery or an AGM battery your best bet? It depends. Find out why, and how you can make the switch. Let’s look at the differences between flooded and AGM batteries, including the advantages and disadvantages of each. Flooded Batteries Standard flooded lead-acid batteries are the most common batteries found in cars and trucks. They are less expensive than AGM batteries, making them the preferred choice for most drivers. Something most people don’t know is that a battery upgrade is easy to do and provides a few benefits for drivers. The flooded batteries used in your car are starting batteries. Starting batteries are designed to provide short, powerful bursts of power needed to turn over engines. AGM Batteries AGM batteries, short for Absorbed Glass Mat, are built to hold a charge better than Flooded batteries — better for stop and go driving or in vehicles that sit for periods of time. They also have a lower internal resistance — which means a higher voltage output and shorter charging time. Other AGM advantages include longer life cycles, and they stand up much better to vibrations and impact. They’re more resistant to extreme temperatures, making them ideal for regions with high heat or intense cold. They are, however, a bit more expensive than flooded batteries. One thing to note, if your car’s original battery was an AGM, it is recommended that you continue using AGM batteries. If you’re experiencing problems with the battery in your vehicle, stop into your local Batteries Plus location and we’ll test it for free. If you need a replacement, we have flooded and AGM options available with great warranties — a year or two for Flooded and 48-60 months on AGM. We’ll even install most new batteries for free.
