About Stories from the Woodshed: Our second series is inspired by the theme of ‘hero’ and reflects both well-known and lesser-known stories and characters, drawn from different cultures and times. Each week we’ll feature a different story from our 1001 Story Collection. The Collection holds a wealth of stories reflecting the theme of ‘hero’. Our selection is inspired by the idea of heroes in many forms, drawn from traditional oral stories. A hero is often a character who, in the face of great danger, combats adversity through feats of ingenuity, bravery or strength. Heroes in classical stories often did such things for the sake of glory, riches and honour. But heroes aren’t always found on dangerous quests or battlegrounds seeking fame and glory. Many heroic stories depict unassuming and selfless acts by characters who are courageous, have moral conviction and often want to protect others at any cost. Heroes can give us wisdom and inspire us with their resilience and integrity. Heroes can provide us with role models and enhance the way we see ourselves and the world around us. Heroes can be rich and famous but they can be also unsung, accidental and invisible. Frideswide by Amber Hsu, told by Florence Roberts: Frideswide is an English princess. Algar, a neighbouring prince, wants to marry her but Frideswide refuses him as she has decided never to marry. She intends to become a nun. Algar is determined to kidnap her so she flees the castle and hides in the woods at Binsey to escape him… https://www.storymuseum.org.uk/1001-s...
