“Do you hug on animals all day?” Photographer Alex Cearns gets asked this question quite a lot and of course the answer is “No! Never! She’s too busy doing serious photography work.” Well … that might be a bit of a slight stretch from the truth. To see what really goes on when Alex photographs animals, film maker Claire Leach created this short doco of her recent visit to Greener Pastures Sanctuary (GPS). It’s scary (she gets chased!), it’s dangerous (she gets jumped on!), and it’s dirty (never walk to the piggery! YOU COULD DIE!). Alex puts her body on the line and her reputation for being a generally intelligent person will never be the same again. While it is three parts fun and one part mud, there is a serious side to it all. Greener Pastures Sanctuary is a haven for the farm animals no one else wants. They take in other peoples “problems” and care for them for the rest of their lives. Common weekly phone calls from those in the city often go like this “I was told it was a mini pig but now its 200 kilos and is wrecking my garden. It has to go” and “I didn’t know it was a rooster but now it’s too noisy and my neighbours are complaining. It has to go.” The GPS resources only stretch so far, yet they always help to find a solution for those in need. Their rescue animals incur mounting vet bills, especially the pigs who regularly need their tusks filed down to prevent injuries to each other, and the horses who require annual dental work and check-ups. Plus there are ongoing costs for emergency surgeries, vaccinations, food, enclosures, and an endless stream of farm equipment repairs. Please watch this clip. Please share it. Enjoy it. Have a laugh. Heck have two and make one of them at Alex's expense. Sit through it until the end. Appreciate the dedicated work of GPS. And that of the team who put this together with love and heart for your viewing pleasure.
